SeaWorld San Diego Wants to Replace Fireworks With 1,000-Drone Shows

SeaWorld San Diego is proposing to end its 58-year fireworks tradition and switch to nightly 1,000-drone light shows over Mission Bay β€” pending California Coastal Commission approval. Here's what that could mean for marine life, for San Diego, and for the future of theme park entertainment.

SeaWorld has been lighting up San Diego's sky with fireworks since 1968. That tradition could be coming to an end β€” or it could still be years away. Right now, SeaWorld San Diego is proposing to replace its pyrotechnics shows with a 1,000-drone spectacular over Mission Bay, but the plan still needs approval from the California Coastal Commission before anything changes.

According to reporting by KPBS, SeaWorld submitted the proposal after years of pressure from environmental groups and local residents. If the Coastal Commission approves it at their upcoming vote, SeaWorld could roll out the new drone show as soon as mid-May 2026 β€” but there's no guarantee yet.

Regardless of the outcome, the proposal itself is a signal worth paying attention to: drones are now a serious contender to replace fireworks at scale β€” and that's a future Creative Skies has been building toward since day one.

Why Fireworks Had to Go

For years, environmental groups have pressured SeaWorld to address the impact of its fireworks shows on Mission Bay's delicate marine ecosystem. San Diego Coastkeeper β€” one of the groups that has litigated over the issue β€” documented what actually falls into the water after each show:

Phillip Musegaas, Executive Director of San Diego Coastkeeper, put it plainly: the fireworks explode directly over Mission Bay's water, and "there's definitely a risk that it's affecting sea lions and seals that are in the vicinity." The evidence has been mounting for years. The writing has been on the wall.

"This is going to be that fundamental change that everybody's been asking for, that SeaWorld's committed to, and really should be a game changer for us here in San Diego and for Mission Bay."

If Approved: 1,000 Drones. Zero Smoke.

SeaWorld's proposed show would feature 1,000 drones β€” a scale that rivals the largest corporate drone light shows in the country. If approved, the show would be choreographed to music, just like a fireworks display, but with the precision, reusability, and environmental gentleness that only drones can deliver.

Unlike fireworks, a drone show produces:

What This Means for San Diego

The Coastal Commission has never weighed in on a drone show of this scale operating "night after night" in the coastal zone, as Council President LaCava noted. That's both a regulatory milestone and a symbolic one: SeaWorld is proposing something unprecedented, and the commission's ruling will set precedent for every other coastal venue in California.

If the commission approves it, the mid-May rollout would coincide with peak summer season β€” giving SeaWorld a chance to debut the show for hundreds of thousands of visitors. It would also make SeaWorld San Diego one of the most visible proof-of-concept cases for drone entertainment at scale.

"SeaWorld has always focused on creating memorable moments for our guests, and we're excited about the possibilities that drone technology brings to nighttime entertainment ... This is a natural evolution for us as we continue to innovate and elevate the guest experience."

Theme Parks Are Watching. So Should You.

Whether or not SeaWorld's proposal gets approved, the fact that it's on the table at all is significant. It's a signal that drones are now a serious, credible replacement for fireworks at scale β€” and that the entertainment industry knows it.

Theme parks, stadiums, city celebrations, sports teams, concert venues, and corporate events have all been watching this space. The questions used to be: Can drones do what fireworks can? and Can they match the spectacle?

SeaWorld's proposal β€” 1,000 drones, zero smoke, nightly shows β€” is answering those questions whether or not the commission approves it this time around.

At Creative Skies, we've been building this future for years. From 100-drone corporate events to 3,000-drone stadium spectaculars, we know what it takes to create a show that rivals pyrotechnics β€” and exceeds them in every category that matters for the planet, your guests, and your brand.

Ready to Light Up Your Sky?

Whether you're planning a one-night spectacular or a recurring show, Creative Skies delivers drone experiences that captivate audiences and protect the environment.

The sky may be getting quieter. The shows are getting smarter. And whether or not SeaWorld gets approved, one thing is clear: the future of nighttime entertainment is in the sky β€” not in the smoke.
